Understanding and Managing Toddler Tantrums

Why Do Tantrums Happen?

Tantrums usually happen because a child is frustrated, tired, hungry, or trying to assert independence. Because toddlers don't have the vocabulary to express their big feelings, they act out instead.

How to Manage Tantrums

  • Stay Calm: Your calm presence will help your child regulate their emotions.
  • Acknowledge Feelings: Let your child know you understand they are upset. "I see you are angry because we have to leave the park."
  • Use Time-Ins, Not Time-Outs: Sit with your child and offer comfort instead of isolating them.

Remember, consistency is key. By responding calmly and empathetically, you help your child build emotional regulation skills over time.
